Possible Alien Abduction

White? Lace?? Who are you and what have you done with Sara?

angora yarn

Yep. I needed a travel project. How many bets on just how long this *stays* white on a trip? (Saving grace: I can always overdye it).

I've got approximately 600 yards, for a small scarf in either of these patterns:

patterns

(Flower Basket Shawl, or Leaf Lace Shawl, both from Fiber Trends). Not being an experienced lace knitter, these looked, well, not easy, but possible. Any hints? Suggestions? Come on, you lace knitters, help!

And in answer to the unspoken question *why?*: it's a gift. The recipient will like its whiteness. But, if I get it too grubby, I'll dye it red!

I'm going to be starting the Flower Basket Lace shawl soon using the angora yarn. But that leaf one looks really nice too!

Markers. Many many many markers. And run a safety line through the work every so many rows, in case you need to unknit a few rows--not that you actually would need to, of course. And lots of markers. And some more markers

Sara, as this is a traveling project, may I suggest the Leaf Lace. It will be much easier to follow. I've made both. It seems that I've had a number of friends that have repeatedly frogged the FBS. It's a bit harder to keep count of stitches in the repeats. I also traveled with FBS. Have fun!

(A little)gin helps. And I am willing to offer therapy during or after, as a survivor of lace knitting failure. Which you of course will not be.

Markers! Someone else already said that--see a trend? I was surprised how easy things were if put a marker in to mark the repeats.

I enjoyed your article in Spin-Off. Your colors are always so pretty, I did a double-take with the white too. Your stuff has made me want to try my hand at weaving. I am using my child as an excuse to get a small loom and try.

I just finished blocking the flower basket shawl. The worst part of the pattern is getting it started. Once you're past that first part and onto the regular charts it goes "easy peasy".

(I did much of mine on the plane to/from California in Oct....)

I've knitted the flower basket, and once I realised that the coloured bits on the chart had not photocopied (um), it was relatively easy. Liz Johnson's done it twice!

I keep reading the title of post below as Viggo heaven. Now if you could combine a Viggo and Virgo heaven, I'd be there like a shot!

Markers. And counting. I've not done either of those patterns so I can't comment on their relative ease, but with markers and counting anything is possible. If I'm doing lace knitting with plain row on the return, I like to do the counting on the return - either counting all the stitches or counting between markers or counting halves of the piece - whatever makes sense and will help you know when a mistake (usually a forgotten yo for me) is made.

I've made FBS and thought it was a great, easy lace project. I've seen Leaf Lace shawl in person (it was in orange) and LOVED IT.

My tip is: don't knit lace except when alone and undistracted. This isn't a socializing sort of knit.

I have not knit the FBS but I have knit two of the leaf lace and find if very easy to memorize after the first thirty lines. It only has a five line repeat which is nice so you don't have to keep draging out the pattern.

I have also seen it in white lace and it is very smashing.
